The World’s largest online video streaming giant YouTube is trying to curb down the spread of fake news by banning Anti-Vaccine content on the platform. Coronavirus shook the World like never before in modern times. Just like the spread of Coronavirus, the thing spreads like wildfire in the current age of the Internet is disinformation. In a step to counter false information, YouTube will ban all videos that contain misinformation about the approved Covid-19 vaccines.
The move is not just about removing Misinformation about Covid Vaccines. But it will ban all videos containing false information about any approved vaccines. YouTube will not allow anyone to post anti-vaccine content that claims false facts. Such as the flu shots causes infertility or the MMR shot, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, can cause autism. The Alphabet Inc. (Google’s Parent company) owned Video platform is also blocking channels associated with Anti-Vaccine activists. Channels that promote prominent activists like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Joseph Mercola will get ban from YouTube.
This move will encourage other Social Media giants such as Facebook and Twitter to take similar measures. The companies face heavy criticism for not taking enough measures to prevent the spread of false information regarding Covid-19 and Health in general. However, the move has been interpreted as a restriction on freedom of expression. Russia lashes out YouTube and threatens to impose a ban after the video platform deletes the Russian State-backed German-language YouTube channel for breaching the Covid-19 misinformation policy.
