Pakistan Aims to Launch 5G Services by August 2024, Joining Global Technology Leaders

In a significant stride toward technological advancement, Pakistan is preparing to introduce 5G mobile phone connectivity to the nation. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication recently announced plans for a 5G rollout scheduled for August 2024. This move positions Pakistan on the path to becoming part of the league of countries with 5G capabilities.

The decision to embrace 5G technology comes as a response to the growing demand for faster and more advanced telecommunications services across the country. To facilitate this transition, government officials have unveiled a comprehensive business plan.

One noteworthy aspect of the plan is the rejection of telecom operators’ requests for free 5G spectrum allocation. Instead, the government is focused on assisting operators in reducing the costs associated with infrastructure development. This strategic approach aims to ensure the successful deployment of 5G services.

Furthermore, the ministry has formally requested the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to select an experienced consultant who can provide critical input. The government is also working on establishing an Inter-Ministerial Advisory Committee, which will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of 5G in Pakistan.

In collaboration with the consultant advisory committee, the government intends to develop an auction policy and business plan.

Prior to the highly anticipated 600 MHz spectrum auction, the business plan underscores the need for substantial reforms in the telecom sector. These reforms include addressing ongoing court cases related to spectrum allocation and creating incentives for telecom operators to actively participate in the auction.

To further encourage the expansion of 5G services, the business plan includes provisions for facilitating the opening of Letter of Credits (LC) and laying fiber optic cables. These measures expected to contribute to the seamless introduction of 5G technology in Pakistan, ushering in a new era of connectivity and innovation.
