ODI Rankings update: Australia maintains slender lead over rivals Pakistan and India

Hamariweb  |  May 11, 2023

Australia remains at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Rankings, following the annual update. Their rating improved from 113 to 118, keeping them narrowly ahead of their closest rivals, Pakistan and India, who are both hot on their heels.

Pakistan had a chance to clinch the top spot from Australia but needed to complete a 5-0 clean sweep against New Zealand. However, they fell short, allowing Australia to retain their position at the top of the rankings.

The annual rankings take into account all series completed since May 2020, with older series being weighted at a reduced percentage. As a result, India slipped down to third place, having been heavily impacted by their recent 2-1 series loss against Australia. Pakistan’s 4-0 away series defeat in England is no longer being counted, which helped them overtake India in the rankings.

While the top three teams have established a significant lead, the rankings below them have undergone some significant changes. New Zealand has moved up to fourth place, ahead of England, who have dropped by ten points. South Africa and Bangladesh maintain their sixth and seventh spots, respectively.

Afghanistan has made a significant leap in the rankings, moving up to eighth place, overtaking Sri Lanka and West Indies. Sri Lanka witnessed a drop in their rating points, while West Indies maintained their rating of 72.

With many ODI matches scheduled in the near future, there is still plenty of opportunity for big movements in the rankings as teams prepare for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
