In a captivating teaser, Netflix revealed the return of beloved cast members as well as the introduction of new faces for the upcoming season. Lee Jung-Jae, who portrays the cash-strapped protagonist Seong Gi-hun, will once again lead the series, while Lee Byung-hun will reprise his role as the enigmatic “Front Man.” Wi Ha-jun, the determined cop entangled in the dark secrets of the deadly game, will also make a comeback.

Joining the cast for Season 2 are Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun, adding even more intrigue to the already gripping narrative.

However, it remains uncertain whether Oh Yeong-su, who delivered a memorable performance as the unassuming Oh Il-nam in the first season, will be returning. Viewers left intrigued by his character’s complex involvement in the game, making his potential comeback a subject of great interest.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, speaking at a Netflix press conference in September 2022, revealed that the second season scheduled to premiere on the streaming platform in 2024. Hwang expressed excitement about the upcoming production, stating, “We will start shooting Season 2 next year [in 2023] and it’ll be released the following year.”

With its tremendous success, Season 2 of “Squid Game” has high expectations to meet. The series captivated audiences worldwide, amassing a staggering 1.65 billion hours of viewing in just 28 days. It further solidified its impact by securing an impressive 14 Primetime Emmy nominations and winning six awards, including outstanding directing, production design, special visual effects, stunt performance, actress in a guest role for Lee You-mi, and a groundbreaking win for lead actor Lee Jung-jae, who became the first Asian actor ever to receive the accolade.

In addition to the Season 2 announcement, Netflix revealed that a controversial unscripted competition spinoff titled “Squid Game: The Challenge” set to premiere in November. This announcement follows previous reports by Variety, highlighting concerns over the conditions faced by contestants, with one participant describing them as “inhumane” and unrelated to the actual game.

The buzz surrounding “Squid Game” continues to grow, and fans eagerly await the return of the series, along with the thrilling spinoff that promises to push the boundaries of competition even further.
