Toyota Indus Motor Company (IMC), a prominent automaker in Pakistan, has refuted recent false rumors about permanently closing its operations. The company clarified that the temporary closure was due to inventory shortages and delays in the issuance of Letters of Credit (LCs), emphasizing that production units resumed operations on June 8 as part of their routine.
In an interview with The Express Tribune, CEO Ali Asghar Jamali reaffirmed IMC’s commitment to the Pakistani market, revealing plans to introduce new models, including a locally manufactured hybrid SUV. Although not explicitly mentioned, the hybrid SUV in question is believed to be the Toyota Corolla Cross.
Jamali highlighted the positive impact the hybrid SUV would have on Pakistan’s environment, reducing carbon emissions by an impressive 35%. He also emphasized its potential to decrease fuel imports and contribute to the company’s localization efforts.
Industry expert Zafar Ali acknowledged IMC’s substantial investment of over $100 million in September 2021 to localize hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Despite facing challenges within the industry, IMC remains determined to expedite the production of partially indigenized HEVs in Pakistan.
