HEC Withdraws Ban on Holi Celebrations in Educational Institutes of Pakistan

In a recent development, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has retracted its previous directive that sparked significant controversy across the country. The initial order had urged higher education institutions to distance themselves from activities deemed incompatible with the nation’s identity and societal values. However, following widespread criticism, the HEC clarified its stance, emphasizing respect for all religions and their associated celebrations.

In its latest notification, the HEC affirmed its deep regard for the diverse religious beliefs and festivals observed in the country. The commission explicitly stated that its intention was never to offend any individual or group. The decision to issue the controversial order had stemmed from a specific incident involving the exuberant celebration of Holi at Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) in Islamabad, which had triggered a heated debate online. While some praised the demonstration of diversity, others criticized the organizers for what they perceived as a departure from Islamic values.

Acknowledging the backlash and the subsequent controversy, the HEC clarified that its previous order had been misconstrued and taken out of context. The commission explained that it had merely encouraged higher education institutions to prioritize academic excellence, research quality, and the development of responsible citizens in alignment with the nation’s ideology. Consequently, the HEC announced the withdrawal of the contentious order, regretting the misinterpretations it had caused.

The swift response from the public and representatives in the National Assembly (NA) further fueled the resolution of this matter. During a session today, the NA speaker condemned the ban and immediately demanded its revocation. Citing the Objective Resolution and the Constitution of Pakistan (1973), the NA speaker stressed the importance of acknowledging the rights of minorities and ensuring freedom for all religious sects to practice their rituals. Consequently, the speaker issued a ruling to overturn the HEC’s decision, with the Parliament pledging to actively address the issue moving forward.

This recent turn of events showcases a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity within the educational landscape while reaffirming the importance of academic excellence. By withdrawing the controversial order, the HEC has taken a step toward fostering an environment that respects all faiths and beliefs, encouraging a harmonious coexistence among students and faculty. The focus now turns to upholding the core values of higher education institutions, fostering research, and nurturing the talents of the nation’s youth.
