In a significant development, the US government has granted legal approval for the first time to a flying car, bringing relief to those frustrated by hours of traffic congestion. Alef Aeronautics’ fully electric flying car, with an estimated price tag of $300,000, has recently received authorization to begin road and air testing.

Alef Aeronautics, a Californian automaker, proudly announced that their Model A flying car has obtained a Special Airworthiness Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This milestone marks the first approval of its kind for a car capable of flight. Notably, Alef Aeronautics has gained support from influential organizations like SpaceX.

Jim Dukhovny, CEO of Alef Aeronautics, expressed excitement over this achievement, stating that it brings them one step closer to providing an environmentally friendly and time-saving commute option for individuals and companies. However, due to evolving FAA regulations concerning flying cars’ unique capabilities, the certification includes limitations on permitted flight locations and purposes.

Alef Aeronautics aims to manufacture the first flying car equipped with both street driving and vertical take-off capabilities. The vehicle’s design is tailored to fit seamlessly within existing urban infrastructure for driving and parking purposes. The flying car can take off vertically or horizontally and accommodate up to two passengers. It boasts a road range of 200 miles and a flying range of 110 miles.

Enthusiasts eager to own a flying car can secure their spot in the queue by making a $150 deposit or gain priority access by paying $1,500. Alef Aeronautics reported that approximately 440 individuals made deposits during the final quarter of 2022. According to CEO Jim Dukhovny, customers can expect to witness their cars taking to the skies by 2025.

Aside from Alef Aeronautics, Joby Aviation, a flying taxi company, achieved a significant regulatory breakthrough as well. Joby Aviation’s shares surged by 44% following the receipt of a Special Airworthiness Certificate from the FAA.
