The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has seen several changes in its leadership over the years. It has been facing legal disputes in various courts that have delayed its election process for the next chairman. To resolve this situation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a new 10-member management committee and appointed Zaka Ashraf as its chairman on Thursday, July 6.
The formation of the new management committee was a result of a summary circulated by the Ministry for inter-provincial Coordination (IPC), which cited the inefficiency of Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana, the incumbent election commissioner of the PCB, as a reason for the litigations.
The new management committee consists of four regional representatives, four representatives from services, and two members nominated by the prime minister. These members will conduct a vote to determine the next chairman within four months. Zaka Ashraf, who previously served as PCB chairman from 2011 to 2014, is one of the prime minister’s nominees and expected to become the chairman again.
Another prominent member of the committee is Zaheer Abbas, a former Pakistan batsman and ICC president. He said he was happy to be part of the committee and wanted to contribute to Pakistan cricket’s development. He also expressed his support for Zaka Ashraf’s leadership and said he would work with him to address the challenges faced by PCB.
The committee will meet today July 6, 2023, to chalk out its strategy for the board. One of its main tasks is to attend crucial ICC meetings in South Africa where the new financial model of the cricket body has to approved.
