Monsoon rains provide essential water for agriculture, hydropower, and drinking in Pakistan. But they also pose risks, particularly in urban areas with inadequate drainage and sanitation. Record-breaking rainfall in recent days caused urban flooding, landslides, and disruptions. The PMD forecasts more monsoon rains and advises provinces to prioritize public safety precautions.

Today, July 6, the PMD has issued an advisory stating that more rain is expected in various regions of Pakistan. The areas include Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan (GB), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Islamabad, Pothohar region, upper and central Punjab, and Northeast Balochistan.

Following heavy rains in Lahore on Tuesday, July 4, the PMD issued a warning as the city broke a 30-year-old record. Lahore received 252 mm of rain in 24 hours, exceeding half of its average annual rainfall of 460 mm. The unprecedented downpour resulted in flooded roads, overflowing sewerage lines, power outages, traffic congestion, building collapses, and stranded individuals, turning Lahore into an urban swamp.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued guidelines for public safety during monsoon season and advised people to avoid unnecessary travel or exposure to rainwater.

Heavy monsoon rains caused urban flooding and landslides in Pakistan, resulting in loss of life, property damage, service disruptions, and impact on millions of people. The PMD forecasted additional rains and advised all provinces to take precautions for public safety.

The government declared an emergency, launched rescue operations with the army, and urged the public to follow safety guidelines. Urban flooding exposed poor infrastructure and planning in Pakistan’s cities. It emphasized the need for improved disaster management, sustainable urban development, and considering environmental and social impacts.
