In a recent development, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a crucial warning regarding the imminent threat of floods in the region. The cause of concern arises as India has released an overwhelming 70,000 cusecs of water into Pakistan’s River Sutlej. This unprecedented surge in water levels has prompted local authorities to take immediate action.
Confirming the release of a massive volume of water from Harike headworks into the Sutlej River, Pakistan’s eastern neighbor, officials have cautioned that the water expected to inundate adjoining areas. In light of this situation, the Deputy Commissioners of Kasur, Okara, Wahari, Pakpattan, and Vehari have advised to make necessary arrangements well in advance. Acting upon the directives from the Director General of PDMA, relief camps established in all districts to assist affected communities.
With a primary focus on ensuring the safety of lives and properties, authorities have urged citizens to avoid approaching urban rivers and canals. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also stepped in, instructing provincial authorities to enhance early warning systems, initiate prompt responses, and carry out evacuations in areas prone to flooding. This proactive approach encompasses flood risk areas along the banks of rivers Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and their tributaries.
Furthermore, the NDMA has directed district administrations to develop contingency traffic plans for urban regions vulnerable to flooding. These plans will facilitate swift de-watering operations and help minimize any potential disruption caused by the floods.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation, keeping a vigilant eye until July 20. Residents residing in high-risk areas strongly advised to stay informed and adhere to the guidelines provided by the relevant administration. By staying proactive and well-prepared, the community can collectively tackle this challenging situation and mitigate the adverse effects of the impending floods.
