As per the news, District Jail Lahore has launched a pilot project to allow inmates to communicate with their families and loved ones through video calls. The project, initiated by Additional Chief Secretary Home, Shakeel Ahmad Mian, aims to improve prisoner welfare and well-being.

The project has enabled 100 young prisoners, who are yet to reach adulthood, to connect with their families via video calls twice a week. This project is the first of its kind in the country’s history and marks a significant improvement in prisoner communication.

The Inspector General of Jails has praised the project and its positive impact on prisoners’ mental and emotional health. He said that video calling helps prisoners bridge the gap with their families and feel supported during their confinement. He also said that plans are in progress to extend video-calling facilities to other jails in Punjab.

The project is part of the government’s efforts to reform the prison system and use technology for advancement. In April 2023, the caretaker Punjab Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, chaired a meeting to discuss prison reforms, including the proposal for conducting trials of prisoners through video links.
