India’s Opposition to Pakistan’s BRICS Participation Fades

In a significant move, Pakistan has been invited to a BRICS seminar in Johannesburg, marking its first involvement in the BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) political arena. China played a role in encouraging Pakistan’s participation, aiming to integrate it into the alliance. BRICS unites five emerging nations, representing a substantial portion of the world’s population and GDP.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, who attended the seminar, expressed Pakistan’s eagerness to engage with BRICS and promote global unity. He noted the potential for collaboration among Afro-Asian nations, Brazil, and Russia in shaping a new global order based on multilateralism and connectivity.

India’s previous opposition to Pakistan’s participation seems to be fading, with Indian Prime Minister Modi expressing support for BRICS expansion. South Africa’s president welcomed India’s stance, indicating a positive response to the idea.

China advocates for enlarging BRICS membership to include more developing countries, making a case for Pakistan’s inclusion. At the BRICS summit, China’s President Xi Jinping criticized attempts by some nations to hinder the progress of emerging markets and developing countries.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia also expressed interest in joining BRICS, raising discussions at the Johannesburg summit. Pakistan has hinted at India’s resistance to its participation but remains committed to standing with fellow developing nations to address global challenges.

Pakistan hopes that future engagement with BRICS will be inclusive, focusing on the overall interests of the developing world rather than narrow geopolitical considerations. This development marks an important step in Pakistan’s engagement with influential global alliances.
