Heavy rainfall has struck Rawalpindi and Islamabad, leading authorities to declare a rain emergency in both cities. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) in Rawalpindi is on high alert as the area faces torrential downpours.
To tackle the situation, Managing Director (MD) WASA, Muhammad Tanveer, has deployed machinery and personnel in low-lying areas to facilitate drainage and minimize flooding. The water level in Nallah Lai, a major concern, has reached a critical point, but authorities have confirmed that water flow remains normal. However, water levels in the canal have risen significantly, measuring 5 feet at Katarian and 4 feet at Gwalmandi bridge.
To address the emergency, MD WASA is personally overseeing water extraction in the affected areas. The underpass at Committee Chowk is efficiently managing traffic, ensuring minimal transportation disruptions.
Rawalpindi alone recorded 186 mm of rain, with Shamsabad reporting the highest rainfall at 188 mm. Bokra received 138 mm, Golra received 103 mm, and Chaklala received 79 mm. Rising water levels have caused flooding in various parts of Rawalpindi, particularly in low-lying areas with poorly maintained drains.
The commissioner of Rawalpindi division has put all relevant agencies on high alert and issued evacuation orders for areas like Katarian and Gwalmandi, where water levels are dangerously rising. The Pakistan Army has been called in to assist the district administration, specifically in dealing with emergencies around Nala Lai. Rescue 1122 and the Pakistan Army are actively providing relief and support to affected residents.
Weather experts predict that heavy rainfall will persist, with more expected in the region. The public is urged to cooperate with authorities and exercise caution during this weather crisis.
