In a race against the brewing storm, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has declared an urgent evacuation along the picturesque coastline of Sindh as Cyclone Biparjoy threatens to wreak havoc. The government is taking steps to protect 10,000 individuals and is urging caution.
As the tropical cyclone transforms into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS), its menacing path is set to converge upon Sindh’s coastal areas come June 15. The India Meteorological Department has sounded the alarm, placing the cyclone a daunting 660 kilometers south of the vibrant city of Karachi.
With meticulous precision, the forecast reveals that Biparjoy is expected to journey northward until June 14, shifting its course to a north-northeast trajectory. They predicted its dramatic climax to transpire between Mandvi in Gujarat, India, and the vibrant metropolis of Karachi, Pakistan, by noon on June 15.
With maximum sustained wind speeds reaching an alarming 125-135 mph, gusting to a fierce 150 mph, the storm’s potential impact cannot underestimated.
Iqbal Memon, Karachi Commissioner, held a high-level meeting to discuss strategies against the cyclonic threat. The Sindh Chief Meteorologist and others built an evacuation plan that suits the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.
Coastal locations such as Baba Bhit, Mubarak Village, Ibrahim Hydri Village, and the harbor will evacuated on June 13 before the storm.
The responsible deputy commissioners of Keamari, Malir, South, and Korangi have entrusted with ensuring the safe evacuation of all residents residing in the designated areas, promptly relocating them to secure havens and well-equipped relief camps.
The government has ordered evacuations from unsafe buildings and scaffolding. Furthermore, cranes and construction machinery positioned within the endangered zones will promptly removed, leaving no stone unturned in the quest to avert potential calamity.
As the evacuated population takes refuge in the designated relief camps, they will make every effort to ensure their comfort and well-being. Adequate facilities and provisions will made available, accompanied by round-the-clock assistance.
In a post-budget press conference, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah emphasized the gravity of the situation, revealing that a total of 10,000 souls will safeguarded under the ambit of this comprehensive evacuation plan.
In addition to the evacuation measures, other crucial decisions reached during the meeting. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code will enforced to maintain order and prevent unnecessary risks. Hoardings, signboards, and solar panels in vulnerable areas will removed, while de-watering pumps will strategically deployed in low-lying regions and potential chokepoints.
Stringent measures will also implemented to prevent electrocution and the toppling of electricity poles. A comprehensive contingency plan devised to address any unforeseen circumstances that may arise.
The commissioner, commanding the city departments with unwavering authority, has yet to leave any stone unturned in preparing for the looming threat of Cyclone Biparjoy. The hospitals have put on high alert, while control rooms have established to manage any potential crisis efficiently.
