Is Threads by META really a copy of Twitter?

Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has launched a new app called Threads, which aims to compete with Twitter in the text-based social media space. The app, which was built by the Instagram team, was made available to users in more than 100 countries on July 6, 2023. But is Threads really a copy of Twitter, or does it offer something different and better?

Threads and Twitter have many similarities in their features and functions. Both apps allow users to post short messages, called threads and tweets respectively, that can include links, photos, and videos. The apps also enable users to like, reply, repost, and quote other users’ posts, as well as follow accounts of their interest. Both apps also have verification badges for public figures and organizations.

However, Threads also has some differences and advantages over Twitter. For one thing, Threads allows users to post up to 500 characters per thread, compared to Twitter’s limit of 280 characters per tweet. This gives users more room to express themselves and share information. Threads also allow users to post up to 10 photos in a single thread, while Twitter only allows up to four photos per tweet.

Another difference is that Threads is integrated with Instagram, which means that users can log into Threads with their Instagram account and carry over their username and verification status. Users can also see which of their Instagram followers are on Threads and easily follow them. This makes it easier for users to switch between the two apps and leverage their existing network.

Threads also claim to have better privacy and safety features than Twitter. According to Meta, Threads does not use hashtags or allow users to search for specific text or phrases, which reduces the chances of spam and abuse. Threads also say that it uses artificial intelligence to detect and remove harmful content and behavior, such as hate speech, bullying, and harassment.

Threads is Meta’s rival to Twitter, aiming to challenge its dominance in the text-based social media market. Twitter, owned by Elon Musk since last year, has faced recent issues. Musk implemented controversial changes like verification fees, political ad bans, and paid subscriptions. His support for conservative politicians and causes has also alienated certain users.

Threads aim to attract users seeking an alternative to Twitter. It offers a sleek design, user-friendly interface, and a close connection with Instagram. However, it’s uncertain if Threads can offer enough value and innovation to stand out and gain a loyal following.
