NEPRA Approves Rs. 5.40 per Unit Electricity Price Hike

In a recent development, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has given the nod for a price hike of Rs. 5.40 per unit in electricity tariffs. This adjustment comes in light of the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2022-23 (FY23) and encompasses various components including capacity charges, transmission charges, market operator fee, incremental units, impact of T&D losses on FCA, and variable operation & maintenance charges.

The decision, reached after a hearing held on Wednesday, is expected to have significant financial implications. Consumers will see an additional burden of Rs. 144 billion imposed by this revised tariff on distribution companies. It’s worth noting, however, that this hike will not impact consumers falling under the Lifeline and K-Electric categories.

The augmented rates are scheduled to be reflected in the billing cycles of September, October, and November. While the comprehensive verdict is yet to be released by NEPRA, there’s a possibility that the Power Division’s plea to extend the collection period from three to six months might be considered. This proposed extension aims to alleviate the strain on consumers who are already grappling with substantial bills.

This move by NEPRA not only underscores the financial intricacies of power distribution but also raises concerns about the potential effects on the general public. As the authority finalizes its decision, many will be watching closely to understand how this adjustment will impact household budgets and the overall economic landscape.
