Everton remain in jeopardy following Brentford’s defeat

Brentford came from behind twice to win all three points against Everton, who had two players sent off at Goodison Park, putting their Premier League survival hopes in jeopardy.

Everton would have secured their top-flight status with two games to spare if Leeds had drawn at home to Brighton earlier on Sunday, but the narrow defeat leaves Frank Lampard’s side just two points clear of 18th-placed Burnley and one point ahead of Jesse Marsch’s side, who have played one more game.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin put the tiniest of touches on Richarlison’s flick to give the hosts an early lead, but the dismissal of teenage defender Jarrad Branthwaite eight minutes later stunned the Toffees fans and flipped the momentum back in the visitors’ favor.

Seamus Coleman’s own goal pulled the Bees level, only for Richarlison’s penalty in first-half stoppage time to restore Everton’s lead.

Yoane Wissa’s looping header made it 2-2 for Brentford in the second half, before Rico Henry headed Christian Norgaard’s pass into the far corner to put Thomas Frank’s team ahead for the first time in the game.

Late on, replacement Salomon Rondon was sent out for a two-footed lunge on Henry, but Lampard’s team will be safe if they beat Crystal Palace at home on Thursday.
