Discusses strategy to handle PTI’s long march to Islamabad.

ISLAMABAD    -   Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has resigned apparently to pave way for PML-N senior leader and finance expert Ishaq Dar is all set to take over the finance ministry.

Miftah stepped down after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N Quaid and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif held an important meeting in London yesterday.

According to the party decidion, Ishaq Dar is arriving back to Pakistan along with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and will take oath as senator on coming Tuesday. Later, Ishaq Dar also told a private TV channel that he will be coming back to Pakistan along with PM Shehbaz on Sunday and will take oath as Senator on Tuesday, adding that after the decision of PML-N bigwigs, he would take oath as Finance Minister on Wednesday.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, outgoing finance minister Miftah Ismail and other party leaders including Ishaq Dar and Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan were also present during the meeting.

In the meeting, the overall political situation of the country was discussed in detail.

The outgoing finance minister Miftah Ismael submitted his resignation to the PML-N supreme leader. “I worked to the best of my ability for four months, and remained loyal to the party and the country,” the PML-N statement quoted Miftah as saying during the meeting.

The party spokesperson shared that while submitting his resignation, Miftah said that the ministry was mandated to him by Nawaz and that he had made him the minister.

Nawaz Sharif appreciated the efforts made by Miftah for performing as finance minister under the “tough economic challenges”. On the occasion, Shehbaz Sharif and Nawaz Sharif nominated Dar as the new finance minister of the country.

The meeting was of the view that the incumbent government had to “put out the fire of economic disaster” caused by the previous PTI-led regime. Earlier, Sharif brothers had decided that Dar would replace the incumbent finance minister Miftah Ismail. The decision to appoint Dar as financial czar appears to be a desperate move by the bigwigs of the PML-N not only to revive the country’s faltering economy but also to regain its lost political capital ahead of the next general elections.

Dar, the senator-elect, is likely to take oath as the finance minister after his arrival tomorrow. PM Shehbaz, who had gone to the UK to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, had met his elder brother in London to discuss key political issues before departing to the US to attend the UN General Assembly session. After the UNGA session, the PM returned to London again and had a long meeting with his brother and Dar, who had left for the UK in October 2017 while he was facing trial in a corruption reference. The PML-N officials accompanying the prime minister revealed that Miftah had opted to resign instead of taking a new portfolio after the party leadership to replace him with Dar.

Miftah’s term as the finance minister is ending tomorrow as he could only serve for six months as he is not an elected parliamentarian. The strategy to deal with PTI Chief Imran Khan’s call for a long march, and ending PTI’s government in Punjab was also discussed. It was decided that Imran Khan’s long march will be dealt with by all legal means and no one will be allowed to create anarchy in the country, said a source privy to the meeting. The meeting decided that the next general elections will be held on time and no pressure from the PTI will be tolerated
