After Pascal Struijk’s injury-time equalizer earned a crucial draw against Brighton, Leeds boss Jesse Marsch insists his side will “give everything” in a last-ditch bid for Premier League survival.
Marsch’s team battled at a rowdy Elland Road, but they appeared to be on the verge of relegation after Danny Welbeck’s calm finish gave Brighton a merited first-half lead.
But the home crowd spurred Leeds on, and Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez saved a Mateusz Klich penalty in both half, as well as a Raphinha free-kick as the pressure mounted.
Joe Gelhardt, Leeds striker, had gone close earlier in the game, but his perseverance was rewarded late on when he found space in the area to raise a ball across goal, where substitute Struijk tapped home before diving into the home crowd in joy.
Leeds rise a point above the relegation zone with just a trip to Brentford remaining, while Burnley slide to 18th with two games remaining and a significantly higher goal differential.
“After the frenzied draw, the points shift the pressure a little,” Marsch added.
“We’re fighting a psychological struggle. You can see how we are put in difficult situations and how determined our staff is.”
“We must also be able to demonstrate this at the start of matches. It’s a battle. Nothing is simple for us.”
“We appear to dig holes and then have to figure out how to get out of them. We are prepared. We’ll put all we’ve got into this final match to try if we can pull it off,” he remarked.
