Google announced an expanded array of hardware devices on Wednesday, the latest hint that the company is serious to expanding beyond its core advertising business and competing with Apple.
Google introduced three new smartphones and its first in-house wristwatch, as well as plans to release a new tablet next year, at its first in-person developer conference in three years. Google also announced changes to Maps, Google Translate, and its main search product.
On Wednesday, Google stunned smartphone lovers by previewing two new flagship devices: the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The two smartphones are slated to be available this fall, though the business did not provide many details.
Google also unveiled the Pixel 6a, a more economical variant of its Pixel 6 range, which was unveiled earlier this year. The Pixel 6a is available in three colours: green, white, and black, and is powered by Google’s Tensor chip.It will be available on July 21 for $449.
There are plenty of Android smartwatches on the market, but Google is aiming to release its own wearable for the first time. The Pixel Watch, which will run on Google’s WearOS operating system and be compatible with Google’s voice-activated Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Wallet, was teased.Several activity monitoring and fitness features will be added thanks to a partnership with Fitbit, which Google acquired in 2019.
Along with the Pixel 7 lineup, the Pixel Watch will be released in the fall. Google also teased a new Pixel Tablet, which would be released in 2020, according to the firm.
Google also unveiled the Pixel Buds Pro, a redesigned version of its bluetooth headphones. The new earbuds come in four colours: orange, green, white, and black, and have active noise cancellation and spatial audio. The Pixel Buds Pro will be available on July 21 for $199.
Aside from the hardware, there were several new software updates. In order to better understand the space, Google Maps users will soon be able to get a real-world image of certain towns via a 3D representation of popular attractions, restaurants, and businesses. While Google Maps already had satellite and street view options, the company claims that its new immersive view feature combines the two to “build a rich, digital model” that gives users the feeling of being on the ground.Users may observe how the location looks at different times of day, how busy it is, and local traffic conditions using a sliding scale.Later this year, immersive view will be available on all mobile devices in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo.
Google is introducing a new skin-tone scale in the hopes of making its products more diverse. The Fitzpatrick scale is used by many beauty and tech industries to define skin tones. It was created in the 1970s by a Harvard dermatologist to identify how different skin hues react to UV light (and, as a result, to forecast a person’s risk of sunburn and skin cancer). Despite only having six skin tones, it’s been used by tech companies for years to inform everything from emoji colours to how wearable heart-rate monitors work on different skin tones to Facebook’s efforts to make AI fairer.
Google is introducing virtual credit cards to assist people protect their financial information when buying online. On Android mobile devices and in Google’s Chrome browser, the function provides a virtual card number that users may autofill instead of their actual card information, disguising their real credit card number from the companies they’re purchasing from.Virtual cards will be available this summer, but only for Visa, American Express, and Capital One credit card holders in the United States. Google claims it will add Mastercard support later this year.
